The links between town and country forged by the Interurban became stronger as the result of another significant transportation milestone-the construction of the Lincoln Highway. Nicknamed the "Main Street across America," the Lincoln Highway was the first transcontinental highway. Not only did it connect cities all across America, locally it connected Fort Wayne's surrounding townships to one another. Originally proposed by Indianapolis Motor Speedway founder Carl G. Fisher as a means of encouraging automobile travel and the improvement of highways in the United States, the project generated great enthusiasm and communities across America vied to be included on its route. This ribbon was worn at the parade on 21 June 1915 to inaugurate the highway coming through Fort Wayne and reads "Lincoln Highway Celebration Reception Committee Vice-President Marshall."
