Title:
Fort Wayne Police Department Gasoline Tricycle
Description:
In 1910 the Fort Wayne Police Department introduced its first motorized vehicle-a motorcycle. A one-cylinder, four-horsepower, Model 1911 Indian Cycle was purchased for $275. A reporter speculated that "the regime for speeders on Fort Wayne streets is on the wane and will soon be over…. [The motorcycle] will be used in running down operators of motor vehicles who exceed the speed limit." A year later a motorized patrol wagon was acquired, replacing two horse-drawn vehicles. This AMF Harley Davidson motorcycle trike was used by the department from about 1965 to 1979. The Fort Wayne police force had a motorcycle unit until 2009.
