Title:
Vietnamese Nón Lá Sun Hat
Description:
Vietnamese Nón Lá Sun Hat

Communist rule of Vietnam created immense conflict and a war that lead to the death of three million people including 58,000 Americans. The United States was the principal ally of South Vietnam. When communist forces took control of Saigon in 1975, the war came to an end. Many Vietnamese peo-ple sought refuge in the United States including Fort Wayne.

This conical shaped hat is a traditional Vietnamese sun hat known as a nón lá or leaf hat. The donor spent six years in a communist prison for his military service in the South Vietnamese Air Force. After being granted political asylum in the United States in 1993, his family moved to Fort Wayne. They brought this hat to their new home five years ago.
