General Electric Identification Badge

This identification badge was worn by Grace I. Smith who worked in the supercharger plant at General Electric in Fort Wayne during World War II. She took the job because it paid more than traditional women's jobs. During the war women across the country went into industrial labor working jobs left vacant by men who'd enlisted in the armed forces. A government campaign to recruit female workers gave rise to the still popular image of "Rosie the Riveter."
