200@200 : December — Commemorating the Ages
Date:
1895
Title:
Fort Wayne Centennial Key
Description:
While the celebration was a year late due to the lack of funding in a previous effort, Fort Wayne commemorated one hundred years since the founding of the city with a week—long celebration in 1895. Perry A. Randall, however, personally funded much of the cost of the event while serving as the Centennial Committee president. Randall, a prominent local attorney, was one of the original investors of the Jenney Electric Company and its first vice—president. In addition, in 1889 Randall bought the old Grand Hotel and renamed it the Randall Hotel.

For his efforts producing and promoting the Fort Wayne centennial, Mayor Chauncey Oakley presented Randall with this ceremonial wooden key to the city. It is sixteen inches long and is painted gold.
