200@200 : November - How We Warred
Date:
c. 1951-1955
Title:
Korean War Air Force Uniform
Description:
After World War II, Korea, as a territorial possession of Japan, was divided into North and South Korea along the 38th parallel. Conflict broke out when Soviet-backed North Korean soldiers invaded U.S.-backed South Korea in June 1950. For Americans, this was a war against the expansion of communism itself. After the Chinese entered the conflict in October 1950, American officials tried to work towards compromise as a way to prevent World War III, and opted for containment rather than victory. In October 1951 peace negations led to an armistice in July 1953. The country has remained divided be-tween North and South at the 38th parallel to the present day.

Fort Wayne local Charles Fleck served in the Air Force as a staff sergeant during the Korean War. In addition to his dress uniform, a raincoat, and a blue wool overcoat, Fleck donated this uniform with jacket, hat, necktie, shirt, and his silver Air Force wings pin. Along with his unit, Fleck was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon for heroism in action.
