200@200 : November - How We Warred
Date:
1991
Title:
Iraqi Beret
Description:
The Persian Gulf War (1990-1991) broke out when Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in Au-gust of 1990. Other Middle Eastern governments, fearing for their own security, requested aid from the United States and other Western nations. The U.S. responded with Operation Desert Storm and after forty-two days of attacks from the air and ground forces the Iraqis surrendered.

This black wool Iraqi beret was brought home from Kuwait by U.S. soldier Jon Iverson, who served as a gunner on a Bradley fighting vehicle during the Persian Gulf War. At the front is the Iraqi coat of arms: a metal eagle pin with an emblem of red, white, and black vertical stripes on the chest of the eagle and three vertical stars on the field of yellow. The inscription in Arabic script under the coat of arms reads "The Republic of Iraq." An Arabic inscription inside the dome of the beret translates to "Army of Hawaneet."
