Title:
Bishop Luers High School Girls Basketball State Championship Medal
Description:
High school sports are a leading part of a school's life. Before 1950 the most important sports were boy's football and basketball. Girls' sports developed more slowly, with the IHSAA Girls State Championship for basketball beginning in 1976.

Fort Wayne has fielded some impressive athletic teams, boys and girls, over the years, but the suc-cess of Bishop Luers High School girls basketball is nothing short of amazing. The Lady Knights have participated in a record nine Indiana State Basketball Championship games, winning six state champion-ships, and are tied for the record of four consecutive state championships for victories in 1999-2002.

When crowned state champions, schools are awarded trophies for display cases, while individual athletes and coaches are given medals. This blue ribbon medal was one of those placed around the necks of the state champion Bishop Luers Girls Basketball team in March 2006. This was the last year that the state championship was held in Market Square Arena in Indianapolis.
