When Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne decided to plan a celebration for its 40th anniversary in 2005, nobody expected a herd of mastodons to invade the town. Just as real mastodons did some 10,000 years ago, these modern-day replicas would roam Fort Wayne again, serving as the base sculptures for local artists to employ their imagination and creativity, transforming them into works of art. In all, 102 mastodon sculptures found their way into the heart of the community. The History Center sponsored this mastodon named Mini-Don. Painted by Aaron Nagy, Carol Linton, Linda Booher, Laura Nagy, Rose Lantz and descendants of Chief Jean Baptiste Richardville, it celebrates in beautiful brush strokes the rich Miami Indian heritage.
