Title:
First Fort Wayne Telephone Directory
Description:
Telephone service arrived in Fort Wayne in 1879-just three years after Alexander Graham Bell first demonstrated his invention during the United States centennial celebration. The very first telephone direc-tory in Fort Wayne dates to 1879 and lists fifty-four users as subscribers of the "Fort Wayne Telephonic Exchange." Interestingly, the label on the back the schedule's frame indicates that it was made with wood from the 1816 fort. By 1894, Bell Telephone served about 1,000 customers in the city. Today, the telephone provides instant communication almost anywhere in the world and it is unimaginable to most people to think of not having access to a phone.
