First Flight Inaugurating Air Mail Service, Fort Wayne Indiana Stamp
Description:
Fort Wayne postmaster Harry Baals, who later became Mayor in 1934, gave this postmark rubber stamp to the Historical Society in 1930. This envelope, which features the stamp, is from a letter sent the same day of the inaugural airmail service flight from Fort Wayne on 6 December 1930. The letter was addressed to Mr. John H. Craig who was assistant superintendent of mail at the post office at the time and was later president of the Historical Society from 1945 to 1947.
