Description:
Mary Maloley Funeral Book - Lebanese

Lebanese or Syrian refugees seeking greater religious freedom and economic opportunity than those offered during the Turkish occupation of Ottoman Syria found their way to Allen County in the late nineteenth century. They quickly assimilated into their new home, learning the language and opening businesses. Restaurants, candy shops, grocery stores and Oriental rug stores were among some of the businesses the Lebanese community established here in Fort Wayne.

In 1908, Lebanese immigrant Mary Maloley moved to Fort Wayne to become a landlord and real estate investor with money she had made dealing in diamonds and gems, though she was said to have also been the Madame of a brothel. Very well known around town, Mary died on December 20, 1944. Her funeral service was well attended and she was buried at Lindenwood Cemetery. This is the guest book from her funeral service.
