In 1969, Freedom Schools were started after the Fort Wayne Community School boycott. Instructors like Katherine Simmons conducted classes for youth in the basements of churches. The class pictured is in Pilgrim Baptist Church located on 1331 Gay Street. Thirteen hundred students enrolled in Freedom Schools. Students return to their regular schools 9 days later after a desegregation plan is promised by Fort Wayne school leaders.
